The Gouverneur Fire Department is a 60 Member Volunteer Fire Department, which is comprised of 3 Fire Companies; Hose Company 1, Hose Company 2, & Rescue Hook and Ladder Company. Each of these companies consists of 20 Members. There are 2 wardens per company along with a Past Chief that takes care of the Department business. There is also an active Exempt Organization.
The Gouverneur Fire Department is a solely Volunteer Fire department unlike others that may have paid Drivers and or Fire Fighters
They have annual elections to elect their Chief, 1st Assistant & 2nd Assistant Chief for the Company. A monthly meeting for each company along with at monthly Department meeting is held for the Fire Fighters.
The Fire Fighters hold a variety of events throughout the year. Some of the events that they have are: Chicken B-B-Q's in the summer, car washes in the summer, tours of the Fire Department and Trucks by Appointment, 4th of July Fire Works, Poker Run during the Winter Blast.
Some Services that the Fire Department has:
- Control Burns
- Chimney Cleaning
- Water Halls
- Letter Drives – Every Other Year (example: 2004, 2006, 2008)
- Coin Cards - Off Year (example: 2005, 2007, 2009)
- These services are done for a small Donation to help are department keep up on equipment and repairs that may be needed.
The Department has 8 Trucks and they include:
2 – Engine Trucks
2 – Tankers
1 – Heavy Rescue Truck
1 – Real in Ladder Truck
1 – Mini Pumper Truck
1 – Dive Bus
New to the Gouverneur Volunteer Fire Department is a Dive Team. The team is active with 10 Divers and 10 Line Handlers. They are in the water at least once a week along with other dive teams throughout Saint Lawrence County.
